TMD’s Top Tips for Data Security in 2024
Last week we watched the CrowdStrike debacle unfold with bemusement here at TMD, content in the knowledge that we were somewhat sheltered from the latest cascading digital technology failure – which appeared to only be affecting Microsoft systems.
How one single outage at a little-known cyber security firm could throw IT systems into disarray on a global scale – grounding flights, halting transactions, scuppering GP appointments – gave us pause to consider the resilience of our own systems.
Here’s what we do to stay secure online:
Get the Simple Stuff Right
We ensure that all our devices are adequately password-protected and can be wiped remotely if necessary. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a must where available, and we use password management tools such as Keychain to minimise human error – the days of 'password123' are long gone.
Keep Systems Up-to-Date
Complacency is the biggest risk to IT systems. The digital landscape is constantly in flux, and vulnerabilities are bound to be exploited by bad actors. We require that our systems be up-to-date, making use of the latest software and safely retiring digital tools that are gathering dust.
As Squarespace Circle members, we also have fantastic friends at Squarespace ensuring that all the websites we create are TLS certified and have the most up-to-date security protocols.
It’s A Team Effort
Everyone at TMD has a stake in staying secure online. We provide regular training on best practices for data protection and general scam awareness.
We’re also registered data controllers with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office, and as such conduct frequent security audits and vulnerability assessments. These exercises help us address issues before they reach global-IT-meltdown levels.
Despite our best efforts, the reality is that the online world is messy – the product of many hands over generations. If the infrastructure we depend on collectively fails, we may find ourselves at a loss.
While there is no silver bullet for ‘ultimate security’, it’s important to remember that we also operate in the real world! Where our actions and intentions are perceived – by our clients, collaborators, and all our stakeholders. In that sense, having a plan should the worst come to pass does make a massive difference.
At TMD, we can help you stay safe online, and ensure your stakeholders know that their data is secure. Get in touch with us today to learn more about IT resilience and how we can support your business.
